Board Approves Increase in Caregiver Wages
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved funding on Oct. 2 for a wage increase for the county’s in-home supportive services workers who provide care to low-income seniors and people with disabilities.
The wage increase will put caregivers on a path to earn $15 an hour by 2020 and will keep workers $1 above the minimum wage thereafter.
“This is a great victory for home care providers,” said Louis James, a Los Angeles resident who has been a caregiver for more than 18 years. “This win isn’t just for us but for the seniors and people with disabilities that we care for. I love being a caregiver, but it’s hard to do this job when I have to struggle to pay the rent or bills. This wage increase will definitely help.”
