Governor Newsom Appoints Long Term Care Workers Union President April Verrett to Alzheimer’s Prevention and Preparedness Task Force
California – Today, Governor Newsom announced the appointment of April Verrett, President of SEIU 2015, California’s long term care workers union, to the Alzheimer’s Prevention and Preparedness Task Force.
As President of SEIU 2015, Verrett leads the union representation of over 385,000 private agency and In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) home care workers and nursing home workers throughout California that provide care to the state’s seniors and people with disabilities. She was elected president by the members of SEIU 2015 February of this year.
Following her appointment, President Verrett released the following statement:
“The caregiving needs of our state are growing exponentially and home care and nursing home workers have been on the frontline witnessing and experiencing firsthand the shift in our state’s demographics and the challenges that are emerging. As California’s senior population is expected to increase from 5.2 million in 2015 to 9 million by 2030, we need sensible policy solutions that addresses the overall health, economic well-being, and long term needs of this growing population.
“I am humbled and ready to bring the voices and expertise of home care and nursing home workers to the table as I work with Governor Newsom and Ms. Maria Shriver in addressing the needs of our loved ones with brain-related diseases and their caregivers.”
