Sacramento, CA – The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California released the following statement after Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 1695 (Carrillo) into law. This crucial legislation ensures that the skilled nursing facilities we count on to care for our loved ones are accountable when there is a transfer of management or a change of ownership. The following may be attributed to April Verrett, Executive Board member of SEIU California and President of SEIU Local 2015:

“Many of us will rely on a skilled nursing facility at some point in our lives to provide quality care for either ourselves or a loved one. That’s why SEIU members supported AB 1695 to ensure that continuity of care and a stable workforce for our elderly and disabled are not disrupted when change of ownership occurs. Too many times, change of ownership in nursing facilities without proper notification and retention of nursing care staff has resulted in a disruption in patient care services and in the lives of the patient care workforce. We’re glad Governor Newsom agreed with us that patients and their caregivers must be protected when skilled nursing facilities change hands, and we are grateful to Asm. Carrillo for her leadership on behalf of skilled nursing patients and workers.”
