Redding woman gives clothes, meal to homeless
For the past month Crystal Dixon has collected socks, coats, scarves, gloves and other warm clothing to hand out to the homeless and others in need.
On Wednesday, she put on a special dinner and handed out the clothing at the SEIU office in Redding.
“We decided to go ahead and open our hearts and put out a hand for anyone who is homeless or in need,” she said.
Dixon is a member of the SEIU and a full-time caretaker for her husband, a retired veteran. She calls her new effort Feed The Need, and it started with a giveaway of sandwiches and hot chocolate to homeless folks shortly before Thanksgiving.
She said she decided to do more for the poor for Christmas, and hosted the clothing giveaway and hot meal on Wednesday.
“I decided to do something a little bit bigger for Christmas,” she said. “I wanted to help. You don’t have to create something new. Sometimes just talking to someone out there who needs a voice helps.”
She plans to keep her fledgling movement going as the New Year turns.
“We hope to do this again in February because people don’t just need around the holidays,” she said. “They need all year round.”
