Safe Nursing Home Staffing Bill Heads to Assembly Floor Vote

Sacramento, CA – The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California released the following statement today after the Assembly Appropriations Committee passed AB 2079 (Calderon). The bill would require nursing homes to bring staffing levels up to federal recommendations.

Laphonza Butler, President of SEIU Local 2015 and SEIU California, said:

“Safe staffing in nursing homes saves lives and prevents injuries. We applaud the Assembly Appropriations Committee for passing AB 2079 (Calderon) today to improve the quality of care in nursing homes.

“California’s nurse assistants do challenging work with compassion. They aim to deliver the best care for California’s elderly and people with disabilities, but when nursing homes fail to provide adequate staffing, these caregivers are put in impossible situations. The results are predictable and tragic: residents suffer and workers face burnout and physical injury.

“By bringing staffing in line with federal recommendations, this bill will give Californians peace of mind that nursing homes will provide the care we all deserve when we need it most.”
