SEIU Local 2015 is growing! Two big union organizing victories in one week.
BIG VICTORIES! SEIU Local 2015 scored two important wins last week when workers at Vitas Healthcare in the Bay Area and at Redwood Springs Healthcare Center in Tulare County voted UNION YES—adding 208 new workers to our local.
“We are so excited to become a part of SEIU Local 2015,” says Irfan Lall, LVN, who works for Vitas Healthcare. “We learned that when we unite—we win!”
Vitas Healthcare: Largest hospice provider in the U.S.
Vitas Healthcare is the largest hospice provider in the country, with operations in 16 states. The workers of Vitas Healthcare provide hospice and palliative care services in the Bay Area, with most care provided in-home, with the rest provided in hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
Because most Vitas workers work solo in private homes, their union campaign posed unique challenges. But the workers were able to come together and achieve their victory. This win is special for SEIU Local 2015 because it builds union strength and standards among the more than 100,000 privately employed non-union home care workers statewide.
Redwood Springs: Largest provider of skilled nursing facility services in Tulare County.
With 176 licensed beds, Redwood Springs is the largest provider of skilled nursing facility services in Tulare County. Redwood Springs is owned by Plum Healthcare, the second largest nursing home chain in California with over 50 nursing facilities in the state.
The Redwood campaign was one of our most challenging in recent memory, with management using questionable and coercive tactics to mislead workers. But Redwood workers remained united to achieve victory.
“It was an incredibly tough campaign. Management fought back hard,” says Redwood worker Christine Lucio. “But we didn’t back down. I am so proud of my brothers and sisters for standing strong no matter what management threw at us.”
