WHERE: Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors
70 West Hedding Street, 10th Floor, East Wing
San Jose, CA 95110
WHO: Santa Clara County In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) workers, members of SEIU Local 2015, the nation’s largest long-term care union and California’s largest labor union representing more than half a million home care providers and nursing home workers; Councilmember Peter Ortiz; San Jose City Council District 3 Candidate Gabby Chavez-Lopez; Working Partnerships USA Movement Building Director Rebeca Armendariz.
WHAT: Santa Clara County home care providers will be rallying and delivering public comment to demand higher wages and prevent the further decline of long-term care infrastructure in Santa Clara County.
WHY: IHSS workers, currently in contract negotiations with the county, are calling for higher wages and better benefits to attract and retain the workforce needed to meet the growing need for in-home care. Many Santa Clara IHSS workers struggle to make ends meet, and this is driving people out of the profession and compromising the future of long-term care in the county.
According to a recent survey, three out of four (78%) Santa Clara County IHSS workers must work more than one job to make ends meet, and more than half (52%) experience consistent food insecurity. The current wage is $20.04 per hour while MIT estimates the area living wage to be $35.44 per hour for one adult with no children.
