San Jose, CA 95110

WHO: Santa Clara County In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) workers, members of SEIU Local 2015, the nation’s largest long-term care union and California’s largest labor union representing more than half a million home care providers and nursing home workers; SEIU 2015 Executive Vice President Kim Evon; South Bay Labor Council.

WHAT: Santa Clara County home care workers, many of whom are immigrants, will be rallying and delivering public comments to demand higher wages. Many care workers have been impacted by the escalation of ICE raids throughout California and demand the protection of their livelihoods through improving the care infrastructure in Santa Clara County.

WHY: The demand for in-home care is growing as the population ages. IHSS workers, currently in contract negotiations with the county, are calling for higher wages and better benefits to ensure their livelihoods. Many Santa Clara IHSS workers struggle to make ends meet, and this is driving people out of the profession and compromising the future of long-term care in the county.

According to a recent survey, three out of four (78%) Santa Clara County IHSS workers must work more than one job to make ends meet, and more than half (52%) experience consistent food insecurity. The current wage is $20.04 per hour while MIT estimates the area living wage to be $35.44 per hour for one adult with no children.

Aggressive federal immigration tactics are spreading fear and uncertainty among immigrant populations, who are being increasingly targeted at workplaces and schools.
