Members of Congress and Representatives from SEIU lift up urgent need for critical investment in the care economy.

WHERE:
IN PERSON – House Triangle, U.S. Capitol, Washington, D.C., 20016
VIRTUAL – Live stream is available here.

WHAT:
Representatives John Garamendi (D-CA), Jimmy Gomez (D-CA), and representatives from SEIU 2015 will host a press conference at the steps of the U.S. Capitol to call for a $20 wage floor and other forms of support for In-Home Supportive Service (IHSS) providers. IHSS caregivers provide a critically important service by caring for seniors and people with disabilities. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the immediate need for our nation to bolster its investments in long-term care and the essential workers who perform the work. Politicians have all gathered and lauded IHSS workers as “essential workers,” but poor working conditions and inadequate pay show that their actions have not matched their rhetoric. In fact, an SEIU 2015 poll shows that 20% of this workforce may leave the industry, while demand skyrockets. This press conference will bring lawmakers and IHSS advocates together to outline a vision for strong legislative action to properly support and care for those who care for our seniors and people with disabilities.
