Fresno, Calif.—All Ways Caring HomeCare (AWC) caregivers represented by SEIU Local 2015, part of a statewide bargaining unit of more than 580 care workers, took to the picket line to demand higher wages and basic benefits. SEIU Local 2015 is California’s largest union, representing more than half a million long-term care workers statewide.
After months of contract negotiations, All Ways Caring HomeCare caregivers held coordinated pickets outside the company’s Solano and Fresno County offices, demanding livable wages and basic benefits. Caregivers represented by SEIU 775 in Montana face similar challenges, as workers across state lines call on AWC to bargain in good faith and reach fair union contracts that recognize their essential work.
“For the past 6 months, I’ve sat across the bargaining table from management to reach a fair union contract. Unfortunately, we haven’t made the progress we deserve. We’re fighting for a livable wage so we can support ourselves and our families. We’re fighting for healthcare so we can stay healthy while caring for others, and we’re also fighting for better training so we can keep providing the highest quality care to those who depend on us. Sadly, management continues to reject our proposals. It’s time for management to bargain in good faith and help us reach a strong contract,”said David Azevedo, AWC caregiver and SEIU Local 2015 member who cares for his friend Mike, who is a veteran.
They were joined by Fairfield City Councilmember K. Patrice Williams, Fresno City Councilmember Annalisa Perea,and Executive Director of the Central Labor Council Dillon Savory, underscoring broad community support for caregivers and a shared commitment building a strong future of care.
As the California population ages and demand for care grows, strong union contracts are essential to attracting and retaining caregivers. “Too many caregivers are considering leaving the profession because they cannot afford to stay, which only worsens the care crisis. This agreement is an important step toward supporting both the caregivers who make this work possible and the people who rely on their care every day,” said SEIU Local 2015 Executive Vice President Kim Evon. “Together, we’ll keep fighting until every caregiver is heard, respected, and has the contract they need.”
