Los Angeles, CA – Today, SEIU Local 2015, California’s largest union representing more than half a million long-term care providers, mobilized caregivers, families, and community allies statewide in support of Proposition 50, the “Election Rigging Response Act”. The Caregivers for Democracy event combined community celebration with political action, empowering caregivers to defend their democracy, their jobs, and their future.

There were events held across the state, with various voter mobilization goals. For example, at the Los Angeles event, SEIU 2015 members led a large-scale phone banking campaign with the ambitious goal of securing 1,000 “yes” votes and 500 volunteer hours in support of Proposition 50. Proposition 50 enables California to fight against the recent moves by President Trump and state leaders in Texas, who redrew Congressional district lines to gain five more seats in the U.S. House of Representatives; Proposition 50 would effectively negate this cynical Republican power grab. Speakers at the Los Angeles event included Assemblymembers Mark Gonzalez and Tina McKinnor, Compton Mayor Emma Sharif, Los Angeles County Democratic Party Chair Mark Ramos, Zahra Hajee, President of the Asian Democrats of Los Angeles County, and leaders and members of SEIU Local 2015.

Other Caregivers for Democracy events were held in: Camarillo, Eureka, Fresno, Lancaster, Oakland, Redding, Sacramento, Salinas, San Bernardino, San Francisco, San Jose, Ukiah, and Visalia.

“Today is about more than just phone calls. Today is about defending our care, protecting our communities, and standing up for democracy. Prop 50 is our tool, our weapon, and our promise to make sure working families, caregivers, seniors, immigrants, and communities of color are not silenced,” said SEIU Local 2015 Executive Vice President Carmen Roberts.

“Prop 50 is not just some policy on paper. It’s a shield to protect our voices, our votes, and our power as working people. When billionaires and extremists try to silence us, we show up stronger, louder, and prouder. Because this is California, and we do not back down,” said SEIU Local 2015 Regional Vice President Leilani Reed, who opened and closed the program.

The Day of Action is in response to Republican efforts to manipulate district maps to secure political advantage, weakening the power of voters of color and working families. With Proposition 50, California has the opportunity to push back against these anti-democratic tactics and safeguard fair representation.

In Los Angeles, 250 members across three shifts worked the phones, reaching fellow union members to secure commitments for the November 4th election. The Los Angeles event also celebrated recent union victories, including LA County IHSS caregivers’ tentative contract agreement, underscoring how organizing and solidarity deliver real change for working families. If ratified, LA caregivers will receive an hourly wage bump to $19.64 starting in January 2026.

With over half a million members across California, SEIU Local 2015 is leading the fight to ensure care work and caregivers are valued, democracy is protected, and all communities, especially those too often ignored, have a voice. To learn more about SEIU Local 2015 visit www.SEIU2015.org or @SEIU2015 on social media.
