Caregivers are the Defenders and the Future of Care
IHSS providers and nursing home workers are coming together to protect, defend and transform the care hundreds of thousands of older Californians and those living with disabilities rely on by:
- Stopping the Governor’s proposed cuts to vital long-term care;
- Fighting to pass AB 283 which will help build a stronger, more sustainable care system in California;
- Protecting the Workforce & Quality Incentive Program (WQIP) for nursing homes.
California’s long-term care infrastructure is broken
We must protect, defend, and transform care in California. There is a severe shortage of providers, and older adults and people with disabilities are unable to access the care they need. It’s no surprise that the IHSS system can’t attract and retain the providers necessary to meet the exploding need for care—they make up the state’s largest low-wage workforce and too many are forced to work multiple jobs and access public assistance.
We must fight back against proposed cuts
Governor Newsom’s May Revise budget is an attack on hundreds of thousands of Californians who rely on long-term care services and the caregivers who make that care possible. Instead of balancing the budget on the backs of low-income older adults and their caregivers, the state needs to find real solutions that don’t put lives at risk.
And fight forward to secure statewide IHSS bargaining
California has an opportunity to bring real stability to the IHSS program with Assembly Bill 283, which could end the state’s patchwork approach to care that results in low caregiver wages and a shortage of workers.
