WHEN:

9:00 AM PT

WHERE:
SEIU Local 2015
2910 Beverly Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90057

WHAT:
SEIU Local 2015, California’s largest union representing more than half a million long-term care providers, will host LA’s “Caregivers for Democracy” kickoff as part of a statewide initiative in support of Proposition 50, known as the Election Rigging Response Act, including in-person voting for LA’s new IHSS contract. Throughout the day, SEIU 2015 members will lead a phone banking campaign to inform fellow members about the initiative and secure commitments of 1,000 votes and 500 volunteer hours, including information about Prop 50 and why it matters to vote on November 4th.

Now more than ever, it is critical to mobilize forces to ensure the success of Prop 50 for working families in order to keep Republicans from rigging elections, a measure that will empower the California Legislature to fight back and protect the democratic representation of communities of color, working-class voters, and other historically marginalized groups.

WHO:
Long-term care workers (members of SEIU 2015), supporters and allies that include: Assemblymembers Mark Gonzales, Tina McKinnor, Compton Mayor Emma Sharif, Mark Ramos, Chair of the LA County Democratic Party, Zahra Hajee, President of the Asian Democrats of Los Angeles County, Union members and leaders from SEIU Local 2015.

WHY:
Across the country, particularly in Texas, Republicans have tried to manipulate district maps to obtain more congressional seats and thereby, weaken the political power of working-class voters and communities of color. Prop 50 seeks to revert this situation and give the California Legislature the power to draw temporary maps for the 2026-2030 elections before returning the power to the people through the independent California Citizens Redistricting Commission after 2030.

Especially given recent political developments including Republican cuts of Medicaid affecting millions, SEIU 2015 is now more than ever committed to safeguarding the rights of working people. Supporting Prop 50 means supporting the most vulnerable people in California as well as families, immigrants, and caregivers who have been historically disregarded by the government despite their essential role in our society. Prop 50 is about correcting these disparities and letting these communities know that democracy is for everyone, not just a select few.
