Sacramento, CA – The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California released the following statement from David Huerta, SEIU California Executive Board Member and President of SEIU USWW, on the immoral and unlawful exploitation of immigrants reportedly trafficked by the administration of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis:
“Exploiting scared, hungry and vulnerable families is inhumane, un-American, and likely illegal. SEIU members wholeheartedly support Governor Newsom and Attorney General Bonta’s actions to investigate and prosecute anyone involved in these crimes. We urge federal officials to likewise pursue any applicable charges such as kidnapping and trafficking of vulnerable families for political purposes.
“Hateful attacks and inhumane actions retraumatize families who have already experienced the deep emotional injury of being forced from their home countries by violence. Every flight of abducted refugees brings more shame on those who aspire to lead the Republican party with inhumanity and white supremacy.
“Right now, SEIU members are at the US-Mexico border, providing first aid, basic healthcare, supplies, and compassion to migrant families who have been running for their lives. Our values call us to embrace the tired, the poor, the sick, and the hungry, no matter where they are born.”
