Sacramento, CA – Today, April Verrett, Controller of the California Democratic Party, the nation’s largest state Democratic Party representing 10 million Democrats, released the following statement on the confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the US Supreme Court:

Today, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation serves not only as a historical moment for America, but as the hopes and dreams women have carried for centuries. As the first Black woman to be nominated and sit on the Supreme Court of the United States of America, our nation watched as Judge Jackson graciously sat through a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing where Republican-elected leaders undermined her record, distorted her character, and aggressively attacked and questioned her qualifications.

In spite of the baseless attempts by Republicans to derail her leadership, Jackson’s dedication to meet the promises of justice for all was demonstrated through her ongoing commitment to a better, fairer America. As one of the nation’s brightest legal minds, she represents far more than just a sitting member of our Supreme Court.

Her confirmation symbolizes the many years that Black women stood firm and insisted on an America that is relinquished of racism, sexism, hate, and discrimination. Her confirmation represents the hard-fought years of arduous work that came before us by leaders like Rosa Parks, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Claudette Colvin, Rudy Bridges, and many more. Furthermore, her confirmation affirmed that despite all that we are up against – we must continue in our steadfast march towards justice, equity, and inclusion.

As Senator Cory Booker proclaimed to Judge Jackson and every person who has ever felt unheard and marginalized: “You have earned this spot. You are worthy.”

Onward, Democrats!
