Where the Power of our Movement Meets the Challenges of our Democracy
Today working people face unprecedented challenges on all fronts. Efforts to take away healthcare from millions of Americans, slash crucial federal funding, and rollback the rights to organize have created a chaotic, confusing political environment for unions and union members. If we are to survive this onslaught we will need to create a wide-ranging political program that unleashes the power of SEIU Local 2015’s 325,000 members.
2018 will be a generational test for Labor and members of SEIU Local 2015, We’ve marched, we’ve chanted, we’ve attended town halls. But, that’s not enough. We must create a far ranging network of working men and women committed to taking back their Democracy.
Our best opportunity to fight back and win is by unleashing the power and potential of our members. This year SEIU Local 2015 will launch a new statewide member political organizing structure, the SEIU Local 2015 Democracy School. Democracy Schools are an ongoing learning program that includes trainings on civics and government, community organizing, and electoral strategy. Graduates of the Democracy School will become Democracy Captains in their community. Democracy Captains will be assigned to work with other long term care providers directly in their neighborhood to build power for 2018 and beyond.
What are Democracy Schools?
Democracy Schools will help members understand and navigate the Democratic process. The school will also provide a premier opportunity for members to learn leadership skills that will allow them to become active participants and key political leaders in their community. No previous experience necessary, all you need is passion, drive, and desire to protect our values and the democratic process. If you are committed to transforming your Democracy SEIU Local 2015 is committed to giving you all of the skills you need to create lasting, effective change.
What are Democracy School Captains?
SEIU Local 2015 will seek to identify a statewide network of “Democracy Captains”, spread
across California. These Captains will work to identify and recruit other members in their community. This network will drive the political program of our Union.
